Veselin Ninov, a 21-year-old pianist born in Bulgaria, was named the winner of the 2011 MPSMF Young Performers Competition. Veselin attends The Long Island Conservatory in Albertson. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in February and has won over 20 prizes at international competitions around the world.
Mary Kim, 13-year-old violinist from Syosset, is the junior winner. Mary has played the violin for nine years and currently studies with Elizabeth Chang at the Julliard Pre-College.
The pop prize winner is 16-year-old David Davani of Sea Cliff. David plays the clarinet, is a junior at North Shore High School, and an honors student at Mannes College of Music, preparatory division. Earlier this year David won the Concerto Competition at Mannes and placed second in the North Shore Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition.
On Saturday, July 9th the 2011 winners will be the headliners at the annual Young Performers in Concert presentation. They will be performing with other very talented young people who have been selected to entertain our audience that evening.
The judges for the 2011 competition which was held on April 9th were Fran Howlett, Stacey Sunshine and Jill Weismann.
The competition is held every year in the spring. It is open to all talented young people who reside or study on the North Shore of Nassau County. The winner is usually in the age range of 16 to 25, but a younger winner is possible. The age limit is 25 years old. The junior winner age category is 10 to 15. The popular music/song winner age category is 10 to 25. Contestants may be vocalists or instrumentalists and each is required to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice.
Contestants may perform to mp3, CD or taped music, but must bring their own battery operated mp3 player, CD or cassette player to the audition. A piano is available if needed. Contestants must provide their own accompanist.
Prizes for the competition winners are $1,000 for the winner, $250 for the junior winner and $250 for the pop winner. The winners must be available to perform on the Morgan Park concert stage at the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival Young Performers Concert held traditionally the second weekend in July. The winners will be presented with their prize at that time. Other contestants selected by the judges may be asked to perform in the park by invitation only.
